To keep your newly restored grout clean, we recommend frequent vacuuming with a soft horsehair brush attachment to pick up dry soil and loose dirt. This is the single most important step in keeping your floors cleaner longer. If necessary, spot clean spills using a neutral stone floor cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
Note: Getting the floor wet without first removing the dry soil will result in turning the easy to remove dry soil into wet and muddy difficult to remove soil.
However, periodically (weekly or bi-weekly or monthly depending on use and environmental conditions) you will need to wash the floor thoroughly to remove the build up of oily soils that accumulate over time. Step One: Start first with a thorough dry vacuuming with a soft horsehair brush attachment to pick up the dry soil, loose dirt, crumbs, hairs, etc.
Step Two: Mix up a bucket of warm water with a rinse-free formula neutral stone cleaner according to the directions on the bottle. Make sure the floor cleaner is neutral pH and that it does not require rinsing. Floor Amore from MB Stone Care is an excellent choice.
Pour the mixed solution into spray bottle or apply the cleaner to the floor in manageable sections using a sponge or microfiber mop. Agitate the solution on the floor gently for several minutes. For stubborn soil in low spots such as in the grout lines, use a microfiber cloth to gently agitate and loosen the soil. Avoid aggressive scrubbing with stiff brushes, etc. A soft bristled brush can be used to gently agitate the soils in the grout joints to suspend the soil in the cleaning solution for extraction.
Step Three: Once the oily soils have been suspended in the cleaning solution, extract the solution using a wet vacuum with a squeegee head (best) or large absorbent towels. Bath towels work well.
Step Four: Dry the floor thoroughly with towels making sure to get into low spots and grout lines where dirty wash water may have settled from the cleaning process.
Tip: Be careful to monitor the cleaning solution on the floor during the process to make sure it doesn’t migrate to baseboards, cabinets, and other adjacent surfaces where it could damage moisture sensitive materials.
For light-duty cleaning, vacuum or dust mop the floor then simply mist some of the neutral cleaner onto a flat microfiber mop head and wipe the floor. This process will not really clean the grout joints very well if they are recessed, so periodic cleaning using the previous described method.
